Gaining real-world experience is a vital aspect of an architecture student’s education. For me, this opportunity came in the form of a six-month internship at Prashant Pradhan Architects (PPA) in the serene city of Gangtok. As an architecture student at the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli, I embarked on a journey to explore the local culture and architecture while honing my skills at PPA. Join me as I recount my experience and the valuable lessons I learned during my time as an architectural intern.

architect's personality traits based on zodiac signs

Belief in the personality traits associated with zodiac signs is a personal choice. Astrology and zodiac signs can be seen as a form of self-reflection and self-discovery for some individuals, while others may view it as pure entertainment or not believe in it at all. It’s important to note that personality traits are influenced by a variety of factors, including genetics, upbringing, personal experiences, and individual choices. While zodiac signs can provide general characterizations, they should not be considered definitive or prescriptive. People are complex beings, and their personalities cannot be solely determined by their zodiac signs.

If you find value in exploring astrological traits and using them as a tool for self-reflection or gaining insights into others, then it can be a source of guidance or entertainment.

Sikkimese architecture

The Sikkimese architecture incorporates elements of Nepalese, Tibetan, and Bhutanese architectural styles, resulting in a unique blend of different cultural influences. This architecture style is designed keeping the local environment and climate in mind, utilising techniques and materials that are well-suited to the region. A tourist visiting Sikkim would likely describe the architecture as unique, colourful, and full of character. They would be struck by the vibrant colours of the buildings, which often feature bright blues, greens, and reds. The intricate carvings and decorative elements, such as the prayer flags and Buddhist symbols, would also be noteworthy to the tourist.

Principles of ARCHITECTURE

Several principles of architecture are generally accepted as important in the design of buildings and structures. While different sources may use slightly different terminology or definitions, the seven principles that are commonly cited are:

  1. Unity
  2. Balance
  3. Proportion
  4. Rhythm
  5. Emphasis
  6. Contrast
  7. Harmony
Overall, the seven principles of architecture are interrelated and should be considered together when designing a building or structure. By carefully balancing these different elements, architects can create designs that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing, while also responding to the needs and desires of their clients and users.

Architecture Vs civil engineering vs other fields

When choosing a stream or field to study and work in that will impact the rest of your life, many students can get stumped. With so many options nowadays, one is almost spoiled for choice, which can make it tougher to make a decision. When it comes to architecture, there are typically two types of prospective students: one that has an art background, but is not confident enough to go into arts, and one that has a structural background, but is creative enough to not want to do civil engineering. There is also a third type: one who doesn’t really have a background in either, but wants to avoid going into other fields, and finds architecture a sort of compromise.

A Crisis in architecture

What? A crisis? You might think this is an exaggeration, but unfortunately, it’s not. Nowadays, there are a variety of issues plaguing the field, which greatly affect the capacity and quality of work.

There are many architecture colleges in India. Most of them operate like art schools, having no set curriculum. There is also a lack of qualified teachers in architecture colleges. Veteran professors are few and are fast retiring. Due to this shortage, many fresh teachers without adequate experience and qualifications are shouldering a load of important classes by themselves. This puts into question the quality of education being provided to the students.

We are called "architects"

Architects are a strange breed. They spend years studying design, construction techniques, and building codes, only to end up being referred to as “Architecture” instead of their actual names. But why is this?

It all started with a typo. Once upon a time, an architecture firm was in the process of creating business cards for its staff. However, when the printer asked for the profession of each employee, someone accidentally wrote “Architecture” instead of “Architect.” And thus, a new trend was born.
